Kayne West Returns to Rap with TLOP
February 19, 2016
In the past two weeks, rapper Kanye West has been in the headlines almost every day for the outlandish comments he made about Wiz Khalifa, Amber Rose, Bill Cosby and even Nike. One has to wonder if this is all a publicity stunt to promote his new album “The Life Of Pablo,” which debuted during the Yeezy Season 3 Fashion Show last month.
The album and fashion show were streamed live to 20 million people across the country on Valentine’s Day, in movie theaters and was available on Tidal.com streaming services, which is owned by his friend rapper Jay-Z. People who bought the tickets for the live stream were able to get a digital copy and other exclusive content before anyone else. West explicitly tweeted that his album would never be for sale. This means the only place it will be available is Tidal and his own website.
It’s been three long years since he released “Yeezues”. He has changed so much in the media’s eyes and as a person. He’s been scrutinized for calling himself a God, being too opinionated, for marrying his wife Kim Kardashian and even naming his kids North and Saint West.
West hasn’t really done anything note worthy but produce and nurture his artists on his Good Music record label since his 5th studio album “Dark Twisted Fantasy”. This may have been the best decision he made. During this time, he adopted many new artists styles, but he still kept his old soul and wisdom that made us fall in love with him.
“The Life Of Pablo” is a very interesting title for the album. He had people curious about what the title was going to be. It isn’t about cocaine kingpin Pablo Escobar but about the great painter Pablo Picasso. Picasso was considered a genius of his time and also heavily scrutinize for his artistic works and vision. West feels he has gone through the same treatment in recent years because he decided to shift from rapping to fashion to take a break from music. He hopes to inspire the world to let go and focus on the arts of the worlds.
The rapper starts off the album with “Ultralight Beam”. This may be his best song yet.
The soul and energy is like no other before. He captures R&B, Gospel and Hip Hop all on one track. The song begins with him just singing and then he uses a gospel choir to repeat the chorus, which gives a soulful tone to the track. Gospel artist Kirk Franklin adds to the soulful harmony with his church rooted vocals and production. Fellow Chicagoan, Chance The Rapper, adds a nice flow to the track by explaining his goal and vision for music. It may be the only rap song ever to be allowed in the church because of its hip-hop sound.
He then opens up to us on the track “Fml”. West decides to pour out his soul and give us a peak into his head. He doesn’t hold back. He talks about his love and family life, business failures, media troubles and his desire to become the most impactful person in society. The Weeknd helps him reinforce his point by singing a painful hook. The combination of The Weeknd’s light voice and West’s dark words gives the song a unique blended of good and evil.
He debuted his track “Wolves” a year ago but we now see a different side to it. He keeps the same hook in the beginning but Sia and Vic Mensa are no longer on the song. Instead, he takes over the whole song and serenades the female listeners with his many metaphors and similes that gives a powerful message of life, love and mistake. His repetitive word play leaves a deep impact on the listener. Singer Frank Ocean makes a surprise appearance on this song and sings his heart out at the end to sum up how cruel and beautiful life can be.
Kanye turned the clock back with “No Parties in L.A.” We get to hear the West we fell in love with back in the day. Rapper Kendrick Lamar and West create an amazing word play. The lyrics separate this track from all the other subpar tunes on the album. If we would’ve got five more songs with this type of sound, we may be calling “The Life of Pablo” the greatest album of all time.
The song with the biggest chance to be stuck in your head is “Fade”. This is an old sample and gives it an up-beat tempo with intense drums to match. After the first ten seconds, you will see yourself dancing to the rhythm of the song. Rapper Ty Dolla Sign starts of the song with an emotional hook. West then takes over and lays down a quick verse. Rapper Post Malone ends it with his smooth vocals and a quick four bars. Although this song has few lyrics, it still has a great impact on the listener because of its marvelous blend of words and instrumentals. It’s very rare to hear a dance pop song with hip hop lyrics that sounds this well.
He brought us a masterpiece. However, it was a noble attempt but sadly a fail. He just isn’t relatable to the listener anymore. He is no longer capable of relating to the common man because he is not a common man. “The Life of Pablo” will go down as a good project for West but for all his fans it will be nothing more than a shadow of his great legacy. Yes he had a couple of great songs on this album, but for every great one there were two bad. It may be time for Kanye west to just focus on his family life and leave hip-hop and fashion to the other artists in the industry.
