Best Movies of 2015

Racheal Washington, Staff Writer

As the year gets under way, here are my predictions of the motion pictures that will surely be blockbuster hits.

“The Divergent Series: Insurgent” comes out March 20. The movie should pick up with Tris and Four fleeing by train. It appears that there will be more action since the previous film was more of an introduction to the faction system for those who haven’t read the books. I’m excited to see how the screenplay turns out as Tris deals with losing both her parents. I also wonder how the film will adapt to Tris’ new hairstyle since Shailene Woodley had to cut it for the film “The Fault in Our Stars.” To all you Ansel Elgort fans, Tris’ brother Caleb will appear more frequently in the sequel, which means more time to drool over his dimpled smile.

Driving in at second on my list is “Fast and Furious 7.” Although Paul Walker sadly passed during the production, most of his acting scenes were already filmed. The remaining ones were left to his little brother. It is also rumored that Brian (Paul Walker’s character) will retire instead of dying, so we can expect to see a Fast and Furious 8 in the near future. Speaking of change, Justin Lin (the director of the previous blockbuster hits) will no longer direct the films. Instead, James Wan will take his place. Hopefully, Wan’s directing style adds even more to the successful series. All should be answered on April 3.

“The Age of Adaline” will be released on April 24. The movie explores a 29-year-old woman, Adaline Bowman, who gets in an accident in 1940 that prohibits her from aging. After decades of keeping a low profile and running away from anyone who grew close to her, Adaline meets a man who might change her view of immortality. This movie reminds me of a female version of “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” but better since this film emphasizes the character’s relationships. Plus, the movie has more of a clear plot unlike “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” which left me wondering what direction the film was going in.

Our favorite Marvel heroes reunite in “The Avengers: Age of Ultron.” The courageous heroes will team up again on May 1, in order to defeat Ultron. This film is rumored to emphasize its plot on less developed characters such as Black Widow and Hawkeye. It is also supposed to have a crucial ending that will contribute to the new direction Marvel is planning for these heroes. Although I have confidence that James Spader will be a great Ultron, I’m still attached to Tom Hiddleston’s performance as Loki. Nobody can beat his rage and demeanor.

The Bellas are back in “Pitch Perfect 2.” On May 15 our beloved Bellas will enter an international competition in which no American team has ever won. Not only am I excited to see the new mash-ups and competitors, but I’m also curious to see if the sequel lives up to the hype or tanks like most sequels do. Although I’m confident that the film will be a success since the cast has amazing chemistry and Rebel Wilson can make even Kristen Stewart laugh, I’m not sure it will be able to top the previous film. Hopefully, the series will be successful like “22 Jump Street” rather than “Mean Girls 2.”

Saving the best for last, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 2” will be released on Nov. 20. Since the revolution continues, Katniss and the other districts must go head-to-head with the Capitol. Although the previous film was a let down,
this one is sure to be an apology for the fans who expected numerous action scenes. I’m hoping Katniss does something more productive than shooting an arrow at a jet. I’m excited to see how the districts will come together. Although the previous movie was the highest grossing film in 2014, this motion picture is sure to break the box office since fans are dying to see how the series ends.
