Gotham Takes New Approach to Batman Storyline
October 13, 2014
With all the new shows premiering this season, you might find yourself trying to find the perfect one. Worry no longer because there is Gotham, which airs Mondays on FOX. The new television drama follows the events leading toward the rise of the famous Dark Knight.
However, the perspective of the story does not always revolve around the young and now orphaned Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz), but around a rookie detective known as James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) whose first case is finding the killers of Bruce’s parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne.
With just the first episode, complex characters are introduced like Gordon’s fiancé, Barbara Kean (Erin Richards), who seems to have a strange past. The villains that we have always known are no longer the main focus; rather, it shows how they came to be.
One of them, Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova), also known as Catwoman, plays an important role later on and though many Batman fans are frustrated that she is older than Bruce, there is a reason for it.
Most importantly is the main character, Gordon, who struggles to remain in the ‘system’ yet follow his own philosophy as he tries to change the corrupted city controlled by crime lords and their lackeys.
Gotham stands out by focusing more on the past instead of the present. The rise of Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor), who is called Penguin to the latter’s annoyance, and the mystery of the Waynes’ murder seems to be running the whole first season.
The whole setting remains the same, in the gritty, dark and ominous city of Gotham, however, the set time is different and the focus is shifted. Using the basis of the immensely popular hero and his city, the origin’s of Bruce Wayne is explored through the eyes of the one who saved him.
There are no heroes, just ordinary moral men and women trying to solve not so ordinary crimes. No one in the Batman series has powers but they just rely on great skills or mutated genes. As the cause of why these villains became who they were emerges, Gotham will solve many mysteries that will all connect for a big reveal. This corrupted city is unwilling to show its answers and it is up to James Gordon to figure it out.
