With the fall season there is a little more to look forward to than just cooler weather. There are many upcoming films based on either books or true stories. It seems like there are even more popular movies releasing this season than there were last year. If you were disappointed by the summer blockbusters don’t worry because you’re in for an exciting fall movie line-up.

Coming to theaters on Oct. 17, “The Best of Me” is based on one of Nicholas Sparks’ bestselling novels. The movie tells the story of Dawson (James Marsden) and Amanda (Michelle Monaghan,) former high school sweethearts reunited after 20 years when they return back to their hometown for the funeral of a friend. This epic love story is the struggle between two star-crossed lovers who dare to rekindle the spark they once had.

A world of fantasy and color, “The Book of Life” is a story of a young man named Manolo (voiced by Channing Tatum) who sets out on a journey through three worlds to rewrite his destiny. Facing his fears to follow his heart, he embraces the future with honor from the past.

Director Jorge Gutierrez animates comedy and adventure in a movie rich in Mexican culture by focusing on Day of the Dead traditions. The movie, which will be released on Oct. 17, also includes Zoe Saldana, Ice Cube and Gabriel Iglesias.

From the producers of popular horror movies like “Insidious,” “Paranormal Activity” and “The Purge,” comes “Ouija” a new supernatural thriller scheduled for Oct. 24. After losing their close friend Debbie (Shelley Hennig), Elaine (Olivia Cooke) and her friends find a way to contact Debbie on the other side using an ancient Ouija board.

Everybody knows not to mess with Ouija boards, but the group risks whatever it takes to learn the truth about Debbie. After things take a scary turn, Elaine and her friends realize that they have gotten themselves into something much more dangerous than just a game.

Director Bennett Miller introduces “Foxcatcher” based on the true story of Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum), a gold-winning Olympic wrestler whose relationship with sponsor John du Pont (Steven Carell) and brother Dave Schultz (Mark Ruffalo) will lead to an uncertain tragedy.

His first two movies “Capote” and “Moneyball”, which both earned him an Academy Award for Best Director, have been nominated for best pictures and scored best actor nominations in the past. So, expect Steven Carell and Channing Tatum to win awards for “Foxcatcher”. The film will be released on Nov. 14 but already was a big hit in this year’s Cannes Festival.

Continuing the trilogy by Suzanne Collins, “The Hunger Games: MockingJay Part I” will be released Nov. 21. District 12 is lost, Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) is held captive in the capitol and Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) is their only hope. It is up to her to lead the rebels or everything may truly be lost. Even though it is said that the last novel of The Hunger Games trilogy was a bummer, I am hoping director Francis Lawrence will prove everyone wrong with the film.

This fall movie line-up has everything from romance to horror. As the first semester progresses, be sure to take a break on the weekends to catch these upcoming movies.
