School Wide Binder Check Friday
November 11, 2015
In an effort to help students become more successful, a school wide binder check will take place during fourth period on Nov. 13.
“This (is) a tool that we want all of our kids to use for organization,” AVID Site Coordinator Katrina Mabry-Smith said. “We want them (the students) to be ready for college.”
A rubric, listing everything needed, will be handed out during fourth period prior to the check.
“They will be graded and each student will be held accountable for having (a) binder on that day,” Smith said.
During the half-day on Nov. 13, teachers will spend time reviewing binder organization skills.
“It’s not like their not going to be prepared for it because we (will) go through the steps with them,” Smith said. “They will get some students to actually show them what an AVID binder should have (in it).”
Seniors are also using the AVID binder system, which is required this year.
“We just want (seniors) to be successful,” Smith said. “We realize that the kids in AVID get that but the kids all over our campus don’t so it’s just a tool to help them prepare for college.”
During the binder check, teachers will look for loose papers, planners and Cornell notes. Junior Natalia Lizcano, who is already in AVID, said she feels prepared.
“A binder keeps me organized,” she said. “Honestly, it can help you.”
Students should use the tools provided for them, Smith said.
“Hopefully, this is going to impact their grades, study habits and ability to locate their resources,” she said. “We have to teach kids to organize and keep up with the dates and deadlines for themselves.”
