On Hayley’s four month check-up the doctor found something wrong with her heart. The doctor heard a murmur and immediately sent Hayley to Cook Children’s Cardiology. Two weeks later she had open heart surgery.
H.O.G WEEK STANDS FOR ‘Helping Others Thru Giving’. In past years students council (Stuco) has raised $63,000 in supporting young children and organizations across the world.
“It is an exciting way to educate teens and our community about then importance of giving,” student council sponsor Heather Mills said. “Positively affecting the life of someone in need making wishes come true.”
Hayley has a disease that involves mitral stenosis, a heart valved disorder that involves the mitral valve. This valve separates the upper and lower chambers of the left side of the heart. Stenosis refers to a condition in which the valve does not fully open restricting blood flow.
“Hayley was diagnosed with mitral stenosis at an early age,” Ms. Mills said. “She was the youngest to receive a mechanical heart valve.”
In 2006-2007 school year, HOG week raised $10,215 for a young boy to go to the Pro Bowl in Hawaii. The 2007-2008 school HOG week raised $20,694 for a faculty members son. In 2008-2009 school year HOG week raised $13,941 for a young girl to go to Disney World. 2009-2010 The school partnered with TOMS shoes, HOG week raised $16,000 for a young boy to go to Washington D.C.
“This is my fourth hog week and every year its my favorite week of the year,” senior Ashley Castillo said. “Its so amazing to see the whole school to get so pumped to help a child in need. HOG week is so much bigger than us all and making a difference is so rewarding.”
Hog week theme revolves around the heart. Ten year old Hayley wishes to go to Disney World. Hayley is the second recipient wishing to go to Disney World. H.O.G week starts Friday, March 4 through Friday, March 11. Come out and get HAM for Hayley.
“Student Council has an amazing week jam-packed with everything from messy pep rallies to a male beauty pageant,” Ms. Mills said. “Event after event to make memories and raise money for a great cause.”
