M-T-H-S WE ARE THE BEST! As the fight song played senior Dapo Odubona waved the wolf sign, formed by his thumb and fingers, over his head. He didn’t know that pep rally would be his last. Dapo ran down the field later that night, his heart pumping, ready to blindside anybody. Coach gave the signal for three, the players looked down on their armband and it was left cut.
Oct. 1, homecoming against Cedar Hill third quarter. They’re losing, but he didn’t want to give up hope, it’s his last homecoming. No one noticed him run off the field, he quietly exited from the game. He fell down on the sidelines and woke up in the Medical Center of Arlington hospital not remembering anything that happened the day before or how he even got to the hospital.
“I was about to blind side somebody, I was getting up and they kicked me,” Dapo said. “Then my eyes went blank, so I ran off the field.”
He didn’t know what happened. Saturday, Oct. 2nd, Dapo found out he received a concussion from getting kicked in the head multiple times. This concussion prevented him from playing football for the rest of his senior year.
“I was very angry and disappointed,” Dapo said. “This whole situation was overbearing and ridiculous. I wanted to play more if I would have had the chance.”
Dapo’s injury surprised his coaches and friends. They visited him in hospital during his stay. Junior and varsity football player Chris Clark said up to this point Dapo had a really good season. Chris and the team misses him.
“I first saw what had happened on Facebook. So he had called me and I was so upset because I didn’t know if he was going to be okay,” senior Courtney Brown said. “But when he told me he was, I was okay. I always go to the games to support him, he has been my best friend since sophomore year.”
Dapo still involves himself with the team, goes to practices and associates with his fellow football players. Even though the concussion stopped his high school football career it didn’t stop his determination for football and his team.
“The doctor said that I couldn’t come back [recover] in four weeks,” Dapo said. “But if we make play offs, I really want to be able to play, and in two days it will be four weeks.”
