With a score of 9-0, the Varsity Girls’ Soccer team defeated the Lancaster Tigers last Friday, at Newsom Stadium.

“I was so excited for the win,” sophomore Leah Moses-Batson said. “We played (as a) team and it helped us gain a victory.”

The team has two freshmen starters.

“I got my first goal of my high school career, so I was happy,” freshman Sophia Millan said. “That feeling of putting the ball into the net and knowing you helped your team win is amazing.”

The game was Senior Night.

“I’m just thrilled we got our first win this season,” senior Arianna Owens said. “I know Lancaster isn’t a great team, but we still came together and fought for the victory. The win is something for us to build on.”

The seniors scored eight goals.

“I look up to all the upperclassmen,” Moses-Batson said.  “Just watching them take over a game motivates me to play better. It will be sad seeing them go next year.”

The team’s record is 1-3, after the victory.

“It was a much-needed win,” Head Coach Matthew Speight said. “I’ve seen these girls put in so much work over this season. I’m glad they finally got rewarded for it. The girls will have a little more confidence going into a tough schedule next week.”

The team faces off against the undefeated Waxahachie Indians today at home.

“We have a big game coming up against a great team,” Speight said. “The weather is going to be nice out and hopefully our play will be the same. I’m looking forward to see what happens.”
