On Saturday April 30th, The Ladies of Sole traveled to Rosenberg, TX to compete in the Texas Step Association State Championship (TSA).
The Ladies of Sole competed against other teams in the Houston area, Central Texas and North Texas for the title State Championship. The Ladies of the Sole took first place in the Girls Division.
“Winning state was the most amazing feeling,” sophomore Breanna Ward said. “There were no words that would describe it.”
Stepping has made some of the girls grow and made them more confident about themselves, freshman Jade Odomone said. The step team shared ups and downs over the year and became a united team.
“Before I became a stepper I never felt like I had a family outside my own,” Jade said. “I never felt like a I was a part of something until step.”
The road to state presented many difficulties. The team lost steppers but became more together in spite of it. They came together and made one step, one sound, one rhythm and won first place, freshman Makayla Hodges said.
“To know that all our hard work paid off was the greatest feeling ever. I would not have done it with any other team,” sophomore Breanna Ward said. “There were no words that could describe it.”
The Ladies of Sole went to state for the first time this year. The girls nerves ran high and the butterflies floated, but they pulled through.
“My experience at state was phenomenal,” freshman Makayla Hodges said. “I feel blessed to get the opportunity to participate and the joy of winning.”
The Ladies of Sole consist of a group of girls from all grades and ages. They have a Captain, Alexis Viray-Edwards, and a Co-Captain. Alexis will graduate this year, but the Co-Captain will become a senior.
“I love my team and I’m happy how this year went. I met a lot of new people and wouldn’t change it for the world,” freshman Makayla Hodges said.
All of the step girls had an over joyed feeling when they won. They all agreed that the win was worth the hard work. Their sponsor, Ms. Rike, supported them the entire way.
“It was amazing and I was really proud of them, and their hard work and effort showed,” Ms. Rike said. “They were nervous and had butterflies in their stomach.”
Unfortunately, the seniors who graduate will not compete in nationals next year, but they send their love and support. This year they won state for the first time.
“I’m very proud of my girls. We worked hard and long and it paid off,” Captain Alexis Viray-Edwards said. “We are now state champs.”
To prepare for nationals, the Ladies of Sole will fund-raise and use money from their banquet to prepare for nationals. The girls conditioned and practiced everyday to prepare. We will work hard because I know it will not come easily, freshman Cassidy Calderon said.
“We’re focused and ready to get down to business. Nationals 2012; the Ladies of Sole are coming and we’re going to bring it all the way home,” Breanna said.
Parents, teachers and their sponsors showed pride in their Ladies of Sole. The Ladies of Sole will preform at Nationals 2012 in Tennessee.
“I would like to tell my girls to keep up the good hard work because next year we’re going to Nationals in hopes to become National Champions,” Alexis said.
