On Saturday April 30th, The Ladies of Sole traveled to Rosenberg, TX to compete in the Texas Step Association State Championship (TSA).
The Ladies of Sole competed against other teams in the Houston area, Central Texas and North Texas for the title State Championship. The Ladies of the Sole took first place in the Girls Division.
“Winning state was the most amazing feeling,” sophomore Breanna Ward said. “There were no words that would describe it.”
Stepping has made some of the girls grow and made them more confident about themselves, freshman Jade Odomone said. The step team shared ups and downs over the year and became a united team.
“Before I became a stepper I never felt like I had a family outside my own,” Jade said. “I never felt like a I was a part of something until step.”
The road to state presented many difficulties. The team lost steppers but became more together in spite of it. They came together and made one step, one sound, one rhythm and won first place, freshman Makayla Hodges said.
“To know that all our hard work paid off was the greatest feeling ever. I would not have done it with any other team,” sophomore Breanna Ward said. “There were no words that could describe it.”
The Ladies of Sole went to state for the first time this year. The girls nerves ran high and the butterflies floated, but they pulled through.
“My experience at state was phenomenal,” freshman Makayla Hodges said. “I feel blessed to get the opportunity to participate and the joy of winning.”
The Ladies of Sole consist of a group of girls from all grades and ages. They have a Captain, Alexis Viray-Edwards, and a Co-Captain. Alexis will graduate this year, but the Co-Captain will become a senior.
“I love my team and I’m happy how this year went. I met a lot of new people and wouldn’t change it for the world,” freshman Makayla Hodges said.
All of the step girls had an over joyed feeling when they won. They all agreed that the win was worth the hard work. Their sponsor, Ms. Rike, supported them the entire way.
“It was amazing and I was really proud of them, and their hard work and effort showed,” Ms. Rike said. “They were nervous and had butterflies in their stomach.”
Unfortunately, the seniors who graduate will not compete in nationals next year, but they send their love and support. This year they won state for the first time.
“I’m very proud of my girls. We worked hard and long and it paid off,” Captain Alexis Viray-Edwards said. “We are now state champs.”
To prepare for nationals, the Ladies of Sole will fund-raise and use money from their banquet to prepare for nationals. The girls conditioned and practiced everyday to prepare. We will work hard because I know it will not come easily, freshman Cassidy Calderon said.
“We’re focused and ready to get down to business. Nationals 2012; the Ladies of Sole are coming and we’re going to bring it all the way home,” Breanna said.
Parents, teachers and their sponsors showed pride in their Ladies of Sole. The Ladies of Sole will preform at Nationals 2012 in Tennessee.
“I would like to tell my girls to keep up the good hard work because next year we’re going to Nationals in hopes to become National Champions,” Alexis said.

As seniors roam these halls for their last three weeks of high school. They will try to cherish all their last minute memories senior Kali Bundas said. They have enjoyed their four years of high school said senior Sean Roland. Only three weeks left untill graduation. If you have something to say you better say it right now because we don’t have much time Kali said. Will the seniors survive out in the real world? Everyone plans to go their separate ways to start a new life. They will make new friends, study hard, and prepare to shape and create their futures.
“High school taught me a lot about myself, some things good others not so good,” Sean said. “I have learned more about myself in these past four years than I have all the fourteen years before it.”
From football games, homecomings, dances, and HOG weeks, senior Ashley Castillo feels she had the time of her life and enjoyed high school more than other people. Her favorite memories involved student council and HOG weeks.
“My high school experience was more than I could ask for,” Ashley said. “Of course I am going to miss Ms. Mills, shes like my second mom besides my own. I’ve spent most of the past years with her.”
Sean felt that high school has helped him grow. Kali feels the same as other students feel; they appreciate all the help from the teachers, family and friends.
“The friends you make here will last you a lifetime and so will the memories,” Sean said. “I am going to miss all the friends I have made here and the memories we have made together.”
Sean will attend The University of Texas Arlington in the fall and plans to study physical therapy and hopefully pursue a career in the field. Ashley plans to move down to College Station in her new apartment.
“All my hard work has finally paid off,” senior Dianna Nguyen said. “I am nervous about writing and saying my speech in front off my whole class because I was named valedictorian.”
Senior Josef Sells said that students spend their time in the classes that they love the most. Students spend their time talking to teachers about college and their futures. Josef believes the teachers have had a huge impact on the students and they helped them prepare for the future.
“I love spending time with Ms. Williams and she is just like me; smart, witty and fun to be around,” senior Shannon Henderson said. “I had her as a teacher my sophomore year and after the first week she became my favorite teacher, we talk about college and how art has influenced me to pursue a career in it.”
Kali says student should have planned on what to do with their lives. Dianna plans on going straight to a university and getting her degree as a neurologist, but for Shannon leaving home right after graduation will not seem easy.
“I’m very nervous about attending a university, I will be far away from my parents and that scares me,” Shannon said. “But I’m excited because I get to experience the college dream, and have plenty of mistakes and learn from those mistakes and make new friends. I will miss all of my friends here, but its time for me to fly and say good bye to Timberview High School and start a new life.”

Junior Octavia Hill won the State Championship of Power-lifting in Corpus Christi on Saturday March 19th. At the State Meet Octavia squatted of 440, benched 195, and dead lifted of 450. Hill beat out 1,190 people in her weight class throughout Texas.
“Winning state felt like a great accomplishment,” junior Hill said. “It’s something I’ve wanted since freshman year but sadly I fell short freshman year.”
Hill knew she had the strength and drive to succeed. Hill has participated in power-lifting for three years including this year. She has trained from November and all through out the season.
“I worked at power-lifting from November and throughout the season. I put in the extra time,” Octavia said.
Power-lifting coach Ricardo Rendon set goals for Hill to beat her original scores and make new ones. He wanted Hill to excel and show everyone how she power lifts.
“We have been pretty lucky here at Timberview with a couple of regional qualifiers and state qualifiers, but, to be where we are at now with six qualifiers and an alternate, it’s just awesome,” Rendon said.
Luckily this season Hill did not get an injury. Octavia committed her mind and took care of her body. Her teammates got injured but she did not want to join the club.
“It feels like we would have a little state jinx this year. We had it the last time,” Rendon said. “But our goal is to finish in the top three and keep improving.”
Hill and the other power lifters had an secret weapon. They shared an practice space with the boys. They worked side-by-side against the guys Monday though Thursday. It helped them have healthy competition.
“The guys will get mad because sometimes we will do more weight,” said junior Octavia Hill, “It’s all in good fun, though, because we really encourage each other to do well.”
Octavia had worked since her freshman year to win state. When she found out she won, her emotions ran high. Her Coach had always had faith in her.
“We were excited and he was really proud of me, but also set goals to beat my best scores,” Octavia said.
Octavia has power lifted sense her freshman year here. She has grown and gotten stronger and more confident in herself ans her power-lifting. She worked hard to achieve this goal.
“I knew I had the strength and drive in me to succeed. My competitive spirit pushed me to keep going,” Hill said.
Power-lifting ran in Octavia’s family. Both her sister and brother competed and had a role position in power-lifting. She had the support system to succeed.
“My brother and sister lifted also,” Hill said. “My sister was caption of power-lifting in 2008.”
Criticism, judging and points all consume power-lifting. Octavia did not have her feelings hurt or on her shoulder when judges criticised her twice on her swat.
“I wanted to quit after the judges called me twice on my swat, but seeing my teammates route for me an everyone in the stands calling my name,” Octavia said. “I pushed through and rode the wave of excitement to victory.”

On Friday March 18, the Lady Wolves varsity soccer team won the district 5-5A title. The team beat Legacy, their rival , 2-1. With this win the Lady wolves would advance to district playoffs.
“After a hard fought season these young ladies prevailed in a very tough district race,” girls’ soccer coach Casey McLean said. “There were so many scenarios and possibilities that all four teams possibly could win the title.”
When the girls left the Friday before spring break the lady wolves sat in first place just three points ahead of Mansfield, four points ahead of Midlothian, and five points ahead of Legacy.
“It felt amazing, great as a freshman to accomplish something so big,” freshman varsity soccer player Ashley Sarmiento said. “Playing the game helps me release stress, it feels like I can achieve better goals.”
During the game against Legacy the varsity took the lead about halfway through the first half and then tied before halftime. The second half with about twenty minutes left they scored taking the lead. Senior Katie Glutz made the final shot during the game.
“It was awesome to see the excitement on the girls faces as they celebrated their accomplishment,” McLean said. “This season has been a definite lesson in ‘When you do the right things, the right things happen.”
The lady wolves finished the season with a 16-3-3 district championship. The night concluded with a senior ceremony involving both family and players. The ceremony celebrated the seniors’ last game of the season.
“On the day of the game it was senior night. We were pumped, excited, and emotional because it was the seniors last year,” senior Jenny Hooper said. “When we won first in districts, I cried and threw water on the coach.”

On Monday March 28, the lady wolves played against Euless Trinity. The lady wolves lost 1 to 0. Junior Jackie Guardiola knew that the girls wouldn’t give up their fight for the title of district champs. The last two minutes felt like a live or die moment for the team. Guardiola said they knew that if they did not slip that one goal, they could have had district title. Guardiola said she only heard silence when the time ended.
“We put up a good fight as a team, and in the end, a lucky break from our opponent.” said junior Presley Gehrig. “But our journey was short, but through it all, we stayed a team, and that’s what counts.”

On Hayley’s four month check-up the doctor found something wrong with her heart. The doctor heard a murmur and immediately sent Hayley to Cook Children’s Cardiology. Two weeks later she had open heart surgery.
H.O.G WEEK STANDS FOR ‘Helping Others Thru Giving’. In past years students council (Stuco) has raised $63,000 in supporting young children and organizations across the world.
“It is an exciting way to educate teens and our community about then importance of giving,” student council sponsor Heather Mills said. “Positively affecting the life of someone in need making wishes come true.”
Hayley has a disease that involves mitral stenosis, a heart valved disorder that involves the mitral valve. This valve separates the upper and lower chambers of the left side of the heart. Stenosis refers to a condition in which the valve does not fully open restricting blood flow.
“Hayley was diagnosed with mitral stenosis at an early age,” Ms. Mills said. “She was the youngest to receive a mechanical heart valve.”
In 2006-2007 school year, HOG week raised $10,215 for a young boy to go to the Pro Bowl in Hawaii. The 2007-2008 school HOG week raised $20,694 for a faculty members son. In 2008-2009 school year HOG week raised $13,941 for a young girl to go to Disney World. 2009-2010 The school partnered with TOMS shoes, HOG week raised $16,000 for a young boy to go to Washington D.C.
“This is my fourth hog week and every year its my favorite week of the year,” senior Ashley Castillo said. “Its so amazing to see the whole school to get so pumped to help a child in need. HOG week is so much bigger than us all and making a difference is so rewarding.”
Hog week theme revolves around the heart. Ten year old Hayley wishes to go to Disney World. Hayley is the second recipient wishing to go to Disney World. H.O.G week starts Friday, March 4 through Friday, March 11. Come out and get HAM for Hayley.
“Student Council has an amazing week jam-packed with everything from messy pep rallies to a male beauty pageant,” Ms. Mills said. “Event after event to make memories and raise money for a great cause.”

The Mansfield Independent School District Community Multi-Scholarship Program originated in 1979 by Trinity Forge Inc., and Mansfield State Bank. The seniors students must fill out the application by February 23.
“The community scholarship program is an application that students submits. It goes out to over 80 scholarship committee members and they look over the application and they decide who gets the scholarships,” counselor’s secretary Angela McQuatters said.
Each applicant must graduate within the year of the awarded scholarship and each applicant must register for college within one year of graduating from high school. Each donor will get their funds returned after one year.
“Over 20 graduating seniors from 09-10 school year from Timberview High School got scholarships ranging from 500-2,000 dollars,” lead counselor Vonda Nunley said.
Each recipient must register as a full-time college student and must provide the name of the post-secondary college or community/junior college in order to receive the scholarship proceeds from the awarding group. The appropriate college will get each scholarship check in the students name by July 15.
“We gave out applications to seniors at the senior meeting, and we sent out e-mails to parents telling them that we have gave the students applications,” Ms. McQuatters said. “and only one student at Timberview has submitted an application.”
Applicants must complete all parts of the application packet which includes application and personal information page, a one page student resume or school and non-school activities and honors page. The school will attach the applicant’s current high school transcript prior to forwarding his/her application packet to the individual scholarship committees.
“We will not except any applications after the specific deadline. After that the applications will not be looked at or even taken. So turn in your application to the counselors or your AP’s,” Ms. Nunley said.

Bzzy Body Aerobics Club a new club started and sponsored by Ms. Faith Collins a nutrition & wellness and interior design teacher and the JV cheer coach. The club meets on Mondays and Wednesdays after school in room 1305. The club consist of only girls from 9 through 12 grade, that could join the work out group. They watch a variety of different work out videos, from P90X to cardio.
“I created Bzzy Body because I wanted girls to be able to come work out for free and be around their friends,” Ms. Collins said. “They do better with positive influences around them.”
Ms. Collins geared the club’s activities more toward individual fitness as opposed to the team sport emphasis found in traditional PE classes. The group focuses on getting healthy, promotes a healthy body image, and building self confidence all while moving and grooving, the permission form stated. Ms. Collins wanted girls to have a free place to workout and have an positive environment around their peer and friends.
“Being with your friends while burning calories is really fun,” junior Jordyn Bowser said. “In a room of only girls and lots of laughs is ideal, when you’re trying to get your workout in.”

A school board administrator walked into art teacher, Ms. Dallas Williams’ classroom, to present her with a mini grant. Ms. Williams face lit up she when they awarded her the grant. She knew exactly what she wanted to do with the money.
Ms.Williams, one of two teachers who won a grant, plans to use the grant for her advanced art classes to make totem poles to place outside around the art rooms. Ms. Williams plans for the totem poles to have different parts that represents the students and what they like to do.
“My first year at Timberview was hard, because I wasn’t around my old co-workers, or my students, each person interacts differently with each other,” Ms. Williams said. “There was new rules that I wasn’t really used to.”
Ms. Williams won her first grant in the Mansfield School District. The advanced class has always done project based art. She also makes sure that the students enjoy what they do during her class.
“I’m trying to get another grant for art so we could display art in the library,” Ms. Williams said. “If I could get the second grant I would put the art around the school and mostly in the library because the library would be a secure place for all the art so that other students could see what my art students are creating in my class.”
Ms. Williams appreciates the value and all the hard work that the students and artist do to create such beautiful pieces of art. Ms. Williams has always appreciated 3-D art, her favorite form of art. 3-D art takes a long time, just like sculpting but with more detail and attracts the eye to the piece of art.
“ I love art, its always been my passion to teach students about the history of art,” Ms. Williams said. “Also letting them show me what they can create.”
