Grease

Written by Calvin Su

Cars, girls, and hair grease. Poodle skirts, 50’s pants, cars with the loud engines chugging down the street. Guys slicking their hair back to impress the ladies. Greasers acting all cool. Nerds getting picked on, girls getting hit on, same things that happen today but less grease. The essences of the 50’s.

Theatre teacher Shannon Quadres selected students from an audition to cast them in the musical Grease. The show will perform in the Performing Art Center (PAC). Jaylen Walker and Tiana Rahman play the main roles as Danny and Sandy.

“At first I was like, ‘Was this a prank?’ The second thought was ‘How am I suppose to memorize all those lines?’ but now I love it,” Jaylen said.

The Broadway musical Grease takes place in the 1950’s. Grease tells the story of some high school students and the life they face. They go through hard times and losing friends but end up hanging together like before.

“I like the whole idea of dancing, singing, and acting all in one. It makes everything more fun,” Tiana said.

Sandy has a careful personality and tries to make the best decision for herself. AT times she gets caught under a lot of pressure from her friends and she forces herself to do something even if she doesn’t wand to do it.

“Sandy is like the perfect child you wish you could have,” Tiana said. “She has moral and high standards and works really hard on things.”

Danny’s personality has more of a leader but arrogant to his friends. He always acts cool around people and tries to get things to go the way he likes it.

“He is just confident in himself and cocky. He knows everyone likes him and he knows what to do during a tight situation,” Jaylen said.

The choir in Grease accompanies the actors during some songs. They have to know most of the songs and dance by memory during rehearsals and performances.

“The choir in Grease has a important roll in the play. They act like normal students and when its time to sing they just get up and go for it,” actor Martin Estes.

The technical students have to build most of the set pieces on the stage. They have to make sure that the set pieces won’t fall over when used during performances.

“The technical students always do a good job at building the set pieces. I’m sure that once they are done with the sets, it’s going to be awesome,” Jaylen said.

The cast will perform the first show on Monday, Jan.25. The show will run from Monday to Thursday, Saturday, and the first Monday of February.

“I have high hopes of the cast being prepared for the show,” Jaylen said. “Everyone worked hard to perfect their parts and lines. I think Grease is going to be a successful show.”
